Catherine Danielle Clark, also known as Kya or the Marsh Girl, lives in a shack with her family within the marshes of North Carolina. The novel starts off with her mother, leaving all her children behind. Kya, no older than seven, sits on the porch steps and believes her mother will be back. Jodie, her older brother, tells her she will, even though deep down, they know their mother left to escape their abusive father.
It isn’t long before all her brothers and sisters leave the house, abandoning Kya, forcing her to fend for herself in the shack with their abusive father. Kya teachers herself how to essentially survive. Over time, she lives alone, still barely more than a child. Kya doesn’t go to school because, in the town, she is shunned as ‘marsh trash,’ and refuses to be made fun of. She becomes an elusive, beautiful girl people don’t bother with. However, Tate Walker changes that when he teaches Kya to read.
Her life opens up, and so does her heart, but when Tate abandons her like everyone else, a broken heart can’t always be healed. Yet, it can be mended, and another guy is there to do that. Everything changes, though, when a local star—Chase Andrews—is found dead. Was this person killed? It’s a question the town decides to answer as yes, pinning the murder on the ‘Marsh Girl’ due to their prejudice. Will evidence or discrimination determine the case?
This novel is a coming of age story where Kya learns to live her life according to the wild marshes. She learns everything there is about her surroundings. The gulls are her family, and the sand is her home. Get swept up in a mystery, romance, and above all, a young woman who defies the odds.
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens is a unique novel, you don’t want to miss out on. I kept seeing this novel and decided to take the plunge and get my copy. I can’t believe I didn’t buy it sooner. It was such an amazing story. The way Owens wrote Kya and how we get to see her evolve and build her own her own life from nothing is remarkable. I love the love story too. I wish we got to see more of it, but the mystery of the murder in the novel was a twist I didn’t see coming.
The ending of this book is perhaps the best I’ve read this year. It was such a shocking twist. I was floored by it, and I know you will be too if you haven’t read this novel yet.
