Today’s exclusive author interview with Christina McDonald is something I have been looking forward to ever since I got an ARC copy of Do No Harm. As you know, I am a HUGE thriller reader and can never resist a good thrill. Let me tell you, Do No Harm delivers, and I will be sharing all my thoughts in the coming weeks on a review!
BUT without further ado, let’s welcome Christina to my blog!
Christina, I’m so excited about Do No Harm, which I got to read early. For those that haven’t read it, tell them more about it.
Do No Harm is about Dr. Emma Sweeney, whose son is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Determined to save him, she makes the risky decision to start selling opioids to fund the life-saving treatment he needs. But when someone ends up dead, a game of cat and mouse ensues with her own husband, the town’s head detective, leading the chase.
What is it you are most excited for readers to read in Do No Harm?
Do No Harm places my protagonist, Emma, in a morally compromising situation, so I’m really excited for readers to read and think, ‘what would I do’? And for them to think more deeply about the opioid epidemic. But most of all, I just want them to have fun and be able to escape into the pages of the story I’ve created.
Do you have a favorite character in Do No Harm? If so, who?
This is such a hard question to answer! All of my characters are my favorite, and I love them all in their own unique ways, much like I would my children. They have such interesting backstories that make me understand, even if I don’t agree with, their decisions, and it makes me love them as people even more.
What is it about the thriller genre you are most intrigued about? Will we ever see you write a sappy love story?
I can’t see myself ever writing a sappy love story. While I love the emotion of a romance as much as the next girl, what I really love in the pages of a book is that sense of suspense, that sneaking feeling of threat, as well as a mystery that I need to unravel.
Did you always know you wanted to write books?
I’ve always known I wanted to write, but it took me a long time to get here. I went into journalism after college and from there into digital copywriting because writing books didn’t seem like a smart way to make a living. And I had student loans to pay off. So when I first started writing, I was working full time and writing in the evenings. But the knowledge and the desire that I wanted to write has always been inside me.
When you first became a USA Today bestselling author, how did it feel?
It was the best feeling ever! Gaining something you’ve worked for basically your entire life gives you a special sense of victory because you’ve worked so hard for it. I literally jumped up on my couch in delight. Lol, And then my husband and I opened a bottle of champagne to celebrate.
The Night Olivia Fell was optioned to a major Hollywood studio! YAY! Can you tell us any more details?
I’m unfortunately not allowed to tell too much about the option, but I can say that a script has been written. Hopefully, we’ll have an update at some stage this year, but of course, Covid has put a massive standstill on everything in Hollywood.
