Why I recommend The Cursebreaker Series by Brigid Kemmerer is simple. Brigid Kemmerer did an incredible job of creating a fairytale retelling like no other books I’ve read. The Cursebreaker series starts off with A Curse so Dark and Lonely. We meet Harper, who gets whisked to Emberfalls and into the arms of ‘the beast,’ aka Rhen. He is under a spell and must find someone to fall in love with him before the end of the season. Sound like a familiar plotline?

A Heart so Fierce and Broken is next, and we get to see Grey come into more of a protagonist role. He is Rhen’s dutiful guard who remained at his side when he was cursed. However, now Grey has his own secret he’s running from. Grey thinks he is protecting Rhen but in reality, is Grey protecting himself? He must come to terms with his secret, and Lia Mara is there to help him. She is a great character in this book and really stood out.
This series concludes with A Vow so Bold and Deadly, where we get a conclusion to Grey, Lia Mara, Rhen, and Harper’s story. I will say I wanted a tad more romance, BUT I cannot complain. The books are great.
What I loved MOST about this series is Brigid Kemmerer didn’t write this series in a cliché way. There could have been love triangles and the fighting for the girl. BUT Brigid decided to take an all-new route and shake things up like I haven’t seen before or since. Each character is strong and dynamic with goals, struggles, and attributes. It is SO hard to pick a favorite, but I have to say I lean towards Grey as my favorite character with Lia Mara coming in second. What makes this a book series I recommend starting with in the YA fantasy genre is each book is not what you think you can expect. It is unlike any other series, and I love it when I am reading things happen I don’t expect.
