Many of you have been writing in inquiring about which novel I am reading now. Yes, I love fantasy and young adult. However, I can never refuse the chance to reread Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. It is a classic story, that yes may be long, but could be longer since the story is that good.
Little Women takes place in the 1860s and centers around the March sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. All the sisters have starkly different personalities. Meg (the eldest) is conservative, helping with tasks, and assisting their mother. Joe is more of a tomboy who has great imagination and a dream to write. Beth is very meek, opting to stay home, while Amy (the youngest) attends school. Without giving too much away, this story is one that grips at your heart, taking you on a journey with the March sisters as they gain wisdom, and essentially growing up. It was during a very hard time the sisters had to find out who they were and have the conviction to be that person. Although, none of it would be possible without their mother, ‘Marmee,’ guiding them.
It is said Alcott based Little Women on her own life. She had three other sisters too, which is how she came up with the fictional March sisters. Some say, Alcott never even stopped people who called her ‘Jo,’ since that character was based on herself.
This story is one of the most read novels and I have to say I know why. The story is one that never gets old, even if you’ve read it a hundred times. I’ve read my copy so many times, the seem of the novel is coming undone. As far as the film adaptions go, I was a fan of the one featuring Winona Ryder, Claire Danes, and Christian Bale. It why I cannot wait to see if it was outdone in the new rendition featuring Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, and Meryl Streep. Are you excited about the new adaption? Why or why not?
Write in and tell me how many times you’ve read Little Women and what’s your favorite scene! I’d love to hear from my book readers!
