The Starless Sea

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern review is finally here. This novel centers around Zachary Ezra Rawlins, who’s attending an Ivy League school. He likes reading and playing video games. However, his world turns upside down when he finds a strange book called “Sweet Sorrows.” What’s eerier is the plot of the book is about Zachary’s life. It is from there Zachary determines to find out where the book came from. This revelation casts Zachary on a journey to the underground world of the Starless Sea. He meets new characters: Mirabel, Allegra, and Dorian.

Were you a fan of this novel?

Dorian is Zachary’s love interest in this novel, who has a peculiar past. In between their story, there are backstories told between chapters. There isn’t necessarily a plot to this story. It is all one giant metaphor.

To get through The Starless Star, you have to possess a particular taste in writing. Everyone won’t enjoy this novel. Erin Morgenstern’s writing is an acquired taste. I just wasn’t a fan. I had a tough time reading it because of all the plot jumping, lack of worldbuilding, and it being a metaphor. The no definitive plotline made this one book I had a hard time getting through. It made writing the synopsis of this novel challenging.

For a fantasy novel, the worldbuilding was not my favorite either. It lacked greatly, which was a huge downfall for me. However, as I said, if you do like metaphors, this book is for you. I do not, which is why I cannot rate this book high. I love visualizing characters in my mind, and I couldn’t get a good grip on Zachary. The jumping of fairytales between the chapters really broke up the flow. Once I got into one chapter, the breaking into a whole other story in the next chapter, threw me way off. It made me put this book down multiple times, and is the reason for the long-awaited review

Did you have a favorite chapter?

I love the cover, which is why I bought this book. Still, even it couldn’t make up for the holes in the plot. Have you read this novel? If you have, write in what you liked best of this book or what you enjoyed least.
