West Side Love Story by Priscilla Oliveras Book Review is here! I had so much fun getting to know the Capuleta sisters in “West Side Love Story” by Priscilla Oliveras. Mariana, Catalina, and their seven other adopted sisters form the mariachi band Las Nubes in San Antonio, Texas. This book is inspired by “Romeo and Juliet” and the musical “West Side Story,” so the classic enemies-to-lovers trope will be very familiar to readers. However, the backdrop of a strong Latinx community in the Southwest is unique to the Capuletas.

Mariana, the quiet, reliable oldest sister, falls in love with Angelo Montero. Angelo is the kind nephew of the Montero family patriarch. Not only are Mariana and Angelo’s families long-time enemies, but they belong to rival mariachi bands competing in a huge state-wide competition for a big cash prize. Mariana and Angelo find ways to steal quick moments together in secret while working together on a required collaboration for the competition.

My Review:

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I love Mariana’s strong sisterhood with her sisters and how she looks out for Nina, her youngest foster sister and the family’s newest member. Family is important to Angelo, too, as he is the father figure to his sister Brenda. Ultimately, Angelo must decide if blind loyalty to his family is always the right choice.

Initially, I was unsure what to expect from this book because Romeo and Juliet spin-offs can go wrong easily. But I was happily surprised because I enjoyed this book! Mariana and Angelo have such a sweet, authentic relationship, and they are so thoughtful and considerate towards each other. Even though they come from different backgrounds socially, their common values and interests are emphasized. I wish there had been a bit more spice, but I know that’s not everyone’s preference!

My favorite aspect of Priscilla’s writing is how she uses figures of speech to describe emotions. I rarely put tabs in my books, but her similes really helped me feel the characters’ emotions. For example, she describes anxiety spreading through a character like a snake or an oil slick and relief flooding like pancake syrup. This emotional depth highlighted Mariana and Angelo’s growing love for each other and the tension between what they wanted personally and what was best for their families. I’m looking forward to the sequel, “Kiss Me, Catalina,” which follows Cat Capuleta, the second oldest sister! Look for this book to be released on November 1, 2022.
