Why you should read books by Colleen Hoover
A little over a year and a half ago, I saw the book Maybe Someday on an influencer’s Instagram. I decided to check it out and quickly became obsessed with Colleen Hoover. I started devouring all of her books. Hoover is the type of writer where you never know what to expect. While Hoover might be a romance writer, her stories will surprise you while remaining relatable. They may even break your heart.
Colleen Hoover is most well known for her contemporary romance books. But she also has other books with secrets to tell. Verity starts with a person getting hit by a vehicle and blood splattering all over the main character. Although shocking, even greater thrills remain in the pages ahead. Verity is a thriller that keeps you on your toes and wondering “what just happened” until the end. Her book Never Never (which she co-wrote with Tarynn Fisher) and Layla are romance fantasy books that tell completely different stories.
One of my favorite things about Hoover’s books is that she writes about tangible issues.
Things that are impacting women every day. For example, It Ends With Us tells the story of an abusive relationship. I always thought a woman should leave if in an abusive relationship. While that may be true, reading this story and seeing it through Lily’s perspective made me realize it is not that easy. In All Your Perfects, you read about Quinn battling infertility, which also creates space in her marriage. Then there is November 9. Readers meet Fallon, whose life was flipped upside down after a fire that took everything from her. So many stories about events that could happen to anyone.
Colleen Hoover is a pro at writing books from multiple perspectives. It is not always the lovers, like in Reminders of Him, but sometimes the lovers and other perspectives. Regretting You is a story about a mother and daughter. It’s about their battles and finding their way through their lives. Another thing Hoover does in her writing is write from different time periods in one’s life— flashbacks to help us see the whole picture of people’s lives.
I can honestly say Colleen Hoover is one of my favorite writers. She draws me in, gets me invested, breaks my heart, and then puts it back together again. I still have a few books of hers I need to read, but I am trying to savor them. Be on the lookout for her sequel, It Starts With Us, coming out in October.
