Why I recommend Every Summer After by Carley Fortune
What’s the last book that bookstagram made you buy or read?
As I’m sure you’ve seen, EVERY SUMMER AFTER has been allllll over booksta, and every single post and review has absolutely raved about this story.
Well, I had major FOMO and decided I absolutely had to read this story. And I am SO happy I did.
EVERY SUMMER AFTER is the tale of Persephone “Percy” Fraser. Seventeen years ago, her parents bought a lakefront cabin in a small Canadian town known as Barry’s Bay. Next door to the Frasers lived the Floreks: Sue, Charlie, and Sam. Percy and Sam are instantly drawn to each other in the way that most young teenagers are and are soon spending every waking second together on the lake.
In the present, Percy hasn’t spoken to Sam or Charlie for twelve years. So what happened? When Percy gets a phone call from Charlie telling her that Sue passed away and inviting her up for the funeral, Percy doesn’t hesitate before agreeing to go. She hasn’t been back in Barry’s Bay since her relationship with Sam imploded dramatically and with finality. She’s nervous but excited.
Told over the course of a few days in the present and five summers in the past, we watch as Percy and Sam’s relationship unfolds, falls apart, and ultimately comes back together.
This is one of those stories that I know is going to stick with me for a long time, and I’m already itching to reread it. The dual timeline is perfection. The switches between past and present are fluid and clean-cut. The tension between Sam and Percy in the present, combined with the teenage angst and nostalgia in the past, made for a fresh and captivating story, one that can easily be enjoyed year-round. If you love Taylor Jenkins Reid and Emily Henry, you’ll absolutely adore this debut from Carley Fortune.
