There is nothing better than reading a good book: one where you feel completely immersed in the story, the characters come alive, and you never want it to end. These three books had all of that and more! With unique storylines, lovable characters, laugh-out-loud moments, and beautiful writing, here are my go-to book recommendations in a few different genres!
Fiction: Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt
What do an elderly lady, a man in his 30s, and an octopus have in common? You would be surprised to find out how much. Tova, a woman in her late 70’s, is the cleaning lady at Sowell Bay Aquarium. She is no stranger to loss and grief and enjoys the schedule and solitude that her job gives her. Marcellus is a snarky, mischievous giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium, constantly observing and commenting on human behavior. Cameron is a lost young man searching for a father he never knew.
This is a richly woven story of love, loss, and finding your place in this world. Told between alternating points of view, this is a captivating tale of three individuals and how their lives intersect. I never knew how much I needed an octopus in my life before I read this book!
Contemporary Romance: Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez
Alexis Montgomery and Daniel Grant come from two different worlds. Alexis is a big city ER doctor with her life planned out for her. Daniel is a small-town mayor running a bed and breakfast and taking life one day at a time. After a chance meeting, the two can’t help but be drawn to each other. How can they overcome the real-world obstacles they face?
I absolutely fell in love with these characters. Alexis and Daniel were authentic and dynamic, and you can’t help but root for them. The strong cast of supporting characters provide great comic relief and round out the story. It’s so easy to get totally immersed in this book.
Mystery: Finlay Donovan is Killing It by Elle Cosimano
When a case of mistaken identity has someone thinking she’s a killer for hire, down-on-her-luck suspense novelist and mother of two Finlay Donovan finds herself accidentally accepting a murder for hire gig. Soon she is tied up in a murder investigation and being chased by the mob, all while trying to write a book and be home by bedtime.
This book had me rolling. Finlay, a frazzled young mom who is just trying to make ends meet, is so relatable. This is a laugh-out-loud mystery with so many twists and turns. It’ll keep you guessing and laughing until the end.
