When I was given the opportunity by Carly-Rae to read The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches I jumped on it. Who wouldn’t want to read a book about witches during spooky season? This was my first book by Sangu Mandanna and it did not disappoint.

While some witches settle down, it’s easier for Mika Moon to stay on the move. Every few months Mika packs up her life and moves to her next adventure. The only time she ever gathers together with other witches is during their quarterly meeting. Her childhood guardian, Primrose, has always made sure to remind Mika that witches are safer when they are separated.

But everyone wants to be part of a community; Mika just looks for hers on Instagram. Mika is constantly posting videos of magic, because everyone thinks it is just a normal woman pretending to do it. When Mika receives a mysterious message with an invitation to Nowhere House, she realizes maybe she wasn’t so discreet after all.

Mika accepts the invitation, and when she arrives at Nowhere House she is met by an older Japanese man, Ian. Ian lives there with his husband, Ken. Ian explains to her that they need someone to teach three young witches how to use their magic. The only problem is they need to learn in just a few short months. The guardian of the young witches, Lilian, is out of town and unable to help them. Mika can’t make any promises, but she knows she can at least help the witches grow more confident in their magic. Jamie, the home librarian who has been like a father to the girls, doesn’t like this idea one bit. He does not trust Mika, or anyone else for that matter. Over time, Mika begins to feel at home at Nowhere House and like part of the family. But when feelings get out of control and secrets are revealed, will Mika be able to keep the girls safe?

I absolutely adored this book. Mika is such a fun, quirky character who pulls you in. Her big heart and witty remarks made me smile throughout this whole book. The grumpy sunshine trope is one of my favorites, and it was excellently executed in this book. You could feel Jamie’s edges starting to soften as you turned the pages. While I enjoyed every character in this story, Ken and Ian were my favorites. I wish they were my grandpas. Every main character made you feel at home. Everytime Ken or Ian spoke, you could feel their kindness radiating off the page. Mika’s quirkiness makes you feel welcome, like you belong in the book with her.

In the lore of this book, witches are cursed to become orphans. This stayed on my mind through every chapter and left me feeling sad at the end. I am a mother myself, and the idea of leaving my children alone in this world is honestly too much to bear. This was the only reason why I did not give this book five stars. I hope that Mandanna writes another book, where Mika searches for a way to reverse the curse and is successful!!

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches was one of my favorite reads this month, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a witchy read. Thank you Berkley Publishing for this free copy.
