I had never heard of Kaira Rouda until HeyitsCarlyRae asked if I would be interested in reading The Next Wife. I am always excited when I come across a new thriller, especially one by an author I have never read before. In The Next Wife, all of the lies told kept me guessing what was real and what was deception. The multiple characters and their individual perspectives kept me on the edge of my seat and flipping through the pages.

Synopsis:

After more than 15 years of marriage, John Nelson leaves his wife and business partner, Kate, for a woman half his age. Tish, just barely older than John’s daughter, Ashlyn, was John’s assistant when he and Kate began their company. Now she is a huge part of EventCo–or so she thinks.

Tish and John have been married for three years, but Tish feels John slipping away. After a huge launch for the company, Tish whisks John away for a quick getaway to try to reconnect. She believes that a weekend together is just what they need.

When Tish wakes up the next morning, she finds John dead on the living room floor. She is devastated and starts to work on funeral arrangements. This means the three Nelson women will have to find a way to get along, especially since they’ll be working at the company together. Kate, however, is completely caught off guard when she discovers that John recently changed his Will, leaving the majority of the company to Tish. This sends up red flags for everyone, and suddenly John’s death no longer seems like an accident.

Review:

Rating

Like most of the books I read, I looked up reviews for The Next Wife on Goodreads. After scanning through some of the comments, I worried that I was not going to enjoy this book. Thankfully, I was wrong.

I think that multiple points-of-view make for a great book. The Next Wife had four POVs: John, Tish, Kate, and Ashlyn. I enjoyed being able to get into all of the characters’ heads to try and put the pieces together. John’s POV before he died really added to the story  and I liked being able to see what he was thinking in his final moments. I suspected that John’s death was not accidental from the start, but only had theories about who could have been to blame. As soon as I thought I knew for sure, a seed of doubt was planted in my mind.

I thought this book was very well written and I loved the ending. I also really enjoyed both of the wives in this book. Even though Tish was the evil stepmom,  there was something very likable about her personality. Kate was also a force to be reckoned with, and I was drawn to her strength and ambition. This pacing of the book was great for the most part, only slowing down a little bit in the middle. Even though there was a lull, I still kept turning the pages.

I really enjoyed  this book, and it just goes to show that a book may not always have stellar reviews, but that does not mean it is not the perfect fit for you!
