The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave has been on my TBR for some time. When this book came out there was a ton of hype around it. After reading romance after romance this past month, I decided to mix it up with some suspense and mystery.

Synopsis:

Hannah married Owen a year ago, and then moved in with him and his daughter, Bailey. Bailey is not Hannah’s biggest fan, but that does not stop Hannah from trying to form a relationship with Bailey. One afternoon someone knocks on the door. When Hannah answers, she is given a note written by her husband that says “Protect her”. Hannah has no idea why Owen has sent this note. Worst yet, he is not answering his phone. She eventually realizes that her husband is not coming home and has left her and his daughter behind.

Owen has been accused of embezzling money, but Hannah knows this would not keep him away from his daughter. With the help of Bailey, and Hannah’s ex-fiance who is acting as her lawyer, they begin to dig into Owen’s past. Together, as Hannah and Bailey uncover the truth of what Owen is running from, they realize some things are better left alone.

The Last Thing He Told Me hooked me from the beginning. Where was Owen? Why would he leave?  From experience, I know something crazy must be wrong for a parent to leave their child behind. I really enjoyed the flashbacks throughout the story.  As Bailey and Hannah worked together to discover the truth, the flashbacks helped bring it all together. There was a flashback to when Hannah was having a conversation with Owen about a certain location. Then in the present, Hannah ]recalled that location and used it to piece the puzzle together. It was really neat to see the growth of the relationship between Hannah and Bailey, and  how they went from having a strained relationship to only having each other to rely on.

As I got closer to the end of the book, it  started to lose me. Hannah was an intelligent character, but toward the end, some of the choices she made seemed to put her and Bailey in more danger.

The fast-paced mystery had this book set it up as a five-star, but the ending fell flat for me. While I gave it three and a half stars, I’ll still read more Laura Dave in the future. The Last Thing He Told Me is coming to Apple TV soon as a mini series produced by Reese Witherspoon. I look forward to watching it and comparing it to the book.
