The Confidence of Wildflowers follows Salem and Thayer and their unlikely romance. Salem is 18 years old and trying to find her passion in life. She bakes with her mom and makes her own candles but is still searching for her true purpose. A new neighbor named Thayer moves in next door, and she is instantly fascinated with him. He is the ultimate grump at first, but when he asks her to help nanny his son, she thinks there might be more underneath his gruffness. Things start to shift from platonic to romantic. The only problem is he’s 30. This age-gap romance comes with love and heartbreak.

This book had me by the throat. It had layers to it, and Smeltzer did a fabulous job pulling at all of my emotions. Although it was a love story, you got to witness trauma and heartbreak on many different levels. I was captivated by the first few words and remained so until the heartbreaking end. I read this book in a day and a half, never wanting to put it down. I swooned, I cried, I laughed, and I cried some more. The rollercoaster this book took me on mirrored that of Archer’s Voice, a book I read in early 2022.

The look at Salem’s childhood tore me apart, but her strength and her willingness to not let it break her were admirable. To me, she represented true sunshine–always shining despite having dark days. She had to make some difficult choices throughout the book, but nothing she did broke her spirit completely. Sure, her shine might have dulled a little, but she didn’t stay that way for long. She not only found comfort and love with Thayer, but she also found herself, and eventually, she found her true calling in life (but you need to read the second book to find out what it was).

Thayer started off as grumpy, but everything he did for Salem made me smile. He helped her in her darkest moments and never forced her to be anything but herself. His response to her childhood trauma was something all people should take a lesson from because survivors never want people to pity them. Which Thayer never did with Salem. If anything, he always made her feel empowered and beautiful. This man really set the bar high for book boyfriends this year, as he did everything right. Towards the end, when tragedy hits and causes his world to turn upside down is when I emotionally lost it the most. My heart still breaks thinking about what his character had to go through.

The Resurrection of Wildflowers

The ending of The Confidence of Wildflowers left me so heartbroken that I immediately started reading its sequel, The Resurrection of Wildflowers.  I wanted Salem and Thayer to have their love story, as no two characters deserved it more. Smeltzer continued to make you experience all the emotions in this follow-up novel, and it made me all warm and fuzzy inside. I also rated this five stars. These two books are must-haves on your TBR shelf.
