Four Books That Deserve More Hype
Bookstagram is a wonderful place… and a bit dangerous. Since joining, I’ve added more books to my TBR pile (and cart) than I care to admit. And so far, all the hyped books I’ve seen and read have been winners!
But some books have captured my heart that I think deserve more love!
The Love Con by Seressia Glass
published December 2021
Kenya is a finalist on a cosplay costume-making reality show. As a self-proclaimed “fat and Black” woman, she’s the outlier for the win. For the final competition, she has to team up with her best friend, Cam, who she’s told the world is her boyfriend. But their fake dating awakens feelings the two have long held for one another. This laugh-out-loud read is a jump into cosplay culture that made my nerdy heart sing!
Winterwood by Shea Ernshaw
Published November 2019
Genre: YA Magical Realism
Nora Walker comes from a long line of “witches,” and she has a deep connection to the nearby woods. Within its depths, she stumbles upon Oliver, a boy who went missing from the nearby Wayward Camp for Boys… and he has no memory of what happened. Their relationship grows into something more the longer they are together. But odd things are happening, and Oliver is hiding something. This spooky read is perfect for fans of magical realism and the deep, dark woods!
Fawkes by Nadine Brandes
Published July 2018
Genre: Fantasy / historical re-telling
There is a stone plague–an illness where people’s skin actually turns to rock. And Thomas Fawkes hides the infection that lies in his eye. There are two warring factions: The Igniters and the Keepers. Each believes the other launched the stone plague. There’s also a magic system where practitioners use masks and colors. Thomas agrees to help his Keeper father–history’s infamous Guy Fawkes–launch the Gunpowder Plot to put an end to the plague, but he may lose his love in return. This novel is great for fans of political plotting and unique magic systems!
