Synopsis:

Bless Your Heart, Rae Sutton takes place in a small town in Alabama. Rae Sutton is back home with her 14-year-old daughter, Molly, to attend her mom’s funeral. Already heart-broken by her husband, Carter, leaving her a year ago, Rae is now completely destroyed. The final dagger to the heart is when Carter shows up to her mom’s funeral with his new, young girlfriend on his arm.

Rae finds a letter addressed to her by her mom, encouraging her to return to her hometown and live in her childhood home. After much consideration, the two Sutton girls and their dog make the move. A group of elderly women invite Rae to their Thursday night Bible study and quickly consider her family.

Slowly, Rae begins to pick up the pieces of her life and put them back together. She starts her own business repurposing furniture. Molly makes the basketball team at her new school. The coach, Kent, happens to be an extremely good looking single man. Kent asks Rae out on a date and Rae finally feels like she is getting back to herself. Rae also continues to find letters from her mom, reminding her she is never alone.

Just when things look like they are falling into place, Rae is faced with a tough choice: start fresh with Kent, or try to mend her relationship with Carter.

Contributor Chandler with Bless Your Heart, Rae Sutton!

Growing up in a small town has helped me appreciate them. The support and closeness of the community brings me so much joy. I loved how Rae’s new friends were so supportive of her. In a small town, everyone really does feel like family. In the book, this group of women offered Rae good, Christian advice and reminded her how important prayer is. I also loved how Rae kept discovering letters from her mom. It was like she was there with her as she grieved, helping her to heal along the way.

Since becoming a parent, some books affect me a little differently. While reading Bless Your Heart, Rae Sutton, I felt so much heartache from Carter leaving Rae after 13 years of marriage and from Rae losing her mom. I also felt for Molly and how her world was ripped out from under her with her parents’ divorce. My parents got divorced when I was in high school, so this story hit a little too close to home.

Most contemporary romance books are predictable and you know how they will end. I love that I truly had no idea how Bless Your Heart, Rae Sutton would conclude. While reading this book I didn’t even know how I wanted it to end. Part of me desperately wanted Rae and Carter to get back together. Another part of me wanted Rae to move on because Carter made his choice. Though I did not mind the ending, it felt like a dark cloud was over me.

Bless Your Heart, Rae Sutton was a three star read.
